Quick answer
How much VRAM do I need to run or fine-tune an LLM?
The VRAM you need is the model's parameters × bytes per parameter, plus about 20% for the KV cache and activations: 2.4 GB per billion parameters in FP16/BF16, 1.2 GB in FP8, 0.6 GB in 4-bit. A 70B model needs about 168 GB, 84 GB or 42 GB. As of 29 October 2026, GPUwithCrypto rents the GPUs that fit, from an RTX 4090 at $0.28/hour to an H200 at $3.07/hour, paid in crypto.
What is the formula?
| Weights | Parameters (billions) × bytes per parameter = GB |
|---|---|
| Bytes per parameter | FP16 / BF16 = 2 · FP8 / INT8 = 1 · 4-bit = 0.5 |
| Running a model | Weights × 1.2. EleutherAI puts the extra memory for inference at no more than 20% of the weights |
| Long context | Add the KV cache: 2 × layers × KV heads × head size × bytes per value × tokens |
| Full fine-tuning | 16 to 18 bytes per parameter (weights, gradients, AdamW states), activations extra |
| LoRA | 2 bytes per parameter for the frozen BF16 base, × 1.2 to plan |
| QLoRA | About 0.75 GB per billion parameters (4-bit base plus adapters) |
How do I calculate the VRAM a model needs?
Multiply the parameter count by the bytes each parameter takes, then add 20%. Worked example, Llama 3.1 70B in FP8: 70 billion × 1 byte = 70 GB of weights, and 70 × 1.2 = 84 GB. That is more than one 80 GB H100 and less than one 141 GB H200, so the smallest fit is one H200. Which GPU serves which model fastest for the money: best GPU for LLM inference.
The 20% covers the KV cache and activations at a modest context length and batch size. The rule and the bytes per parameter come from EleutherAI's Transformer Math 101. It is a sizing rule, not a guarantee: long prompts, many parallel users and framework overhead push past it. A total within 5% of a card's VRAM, such as Qwen2.5 32B in BF16 (78 GB) on an 80 GB card, runs with short prompts only; take the next size up for long ones.
How much VRAM does each model need, and which GPU fits?
Each cell: weights × 1.2 → the smallest fit on our GPUs → its price per hour. Smallest fit = the fewest GPUs (1, 2, 4 or 8) whose combined VRAM holds the total, then the cheapest of those at our prices of 29 October 2026. Parameter counts from the official model cards.

Arithmetic: 70B in BF16 = 70 × 2 = 140 GB, × 1.2 = 168 GB. The A100 has no FP8 Tensor Cores, so FP8 cells point to Ada, Hopper or Blackwell GPUs. GPU sizes: RTX 4090 24 GB, RTX 5090 32 GB, L40S 48 GB, A100 and H100 80 GB, H200 141 GB, B200 180 GB.
How much VRAM do models released already quantized need?
Some models ship in their own compact format, so the weights are measured on Hugging Face instead of computed. Mixture-of-experts (MoE) models activate a few experts per token: that cuts compute, not memory, because every expert must sit in VRAM.
| Model | Total / active parameters | Weights as published | × 1.2 | Smallest fit | GPUwithCrypto per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| gpt-oss-120b | 117B / 5.1B | 65.3 GB (MXFP4 MoE weights) | 78.3 GB | 1× H100 80GB (the card: "a single 80GB GPU") | $2.32/hour |

V4 weights = total size of the safetensors files in each deepseek-ai repository, read on 29 October 2026. Serving engines document larger layouts for V4 Flash (4× H200 in SGLang's cookbook): see the DeepSeek V4 guide.
How much VRAM does a long context add?
A long context adds the KV cache: two vectors (key and value) per layer, per KV head, per token. For Llama 3.1 70B (80 layers, 8 KV heads of 128 values, per the Llama 3 paper) in BF16: 2 × 80 × 8 × 128 × 2 bytes = 327,680 bytes per token. One 128K-token conversation (131,072 tokens) therefore needs 42.9 GB.
Add that to the FP8 weights: 70 + 42.9 = 112.9 GB, still one H200. Four such conversations at once need 70 + 4 × 42.9 = 241.6 GB, so two H200s. An FP8 KV cache halves the cache figures. DeepSeek models compress their attention cache, so this formula does not apply to them.
What is the KV cache per conversation (BF16)?
| Model | Per token | 8K tokens | 32K tokens | 128K tokens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Llama 3.1 8B | 128 KiB | 1.1 GB | 4.3 GB | 17.2 GB |
| Llama 3.1 70B | 320 KiB | 2.7 GB | 10.7 GB | 42.9 GB |
| Qwen2.5 72B | 320 KiB | 2.7 GB | 10.7 GB | 42.9 GB |
| Llama 3.1 405B | 504 KiB | 4.2 GB | 16.9 GB | 67.6 GB |
How much VRAM do I need to fine-tune an LLM?
Full fine-tuning needs 16 to 18 bytes per parameter before activations. EleutherAI counts 2 bytes of weights, 12 of optimizer state (with the FP32 copy) and 2 of gradients; Hugging Face counts 6 + 8 + 4 = 18. LoRA freezes the base model, so it needs about 2 bytes per parameter for a BF16 base; the LoRA paper reports a 3× cut in GPU memory against full fine-tuning. Our × 1.2 planning margin on LoRA is our own convention. QLoRA loads the base in 4-bit: its authors fine-tuned a 65B model on one 48 GB GPU, 48 ÷ 65 = 0.74 GB per billion parameters, rounded to 0.75. Each method applied to a 70B model: best GPU to fine-tune Llama 70B.
Which GPU fits each fine-tuning method?
Memory by the rules above → smallest fit on our GPUs → price per hour (29 October 2026). Activations come on top; gradient checkpointing reduces them.
| Model | Full fine-tune (16–18 B/param) | LoRA (BF16 base × 1.2) | QLoRA (0.75 GB per B) |

| Qwen2.5 32B | 520–585 GB → 4× B200 · $18.44/hour | 78 GB → 1× A100 80GB · $0.92/hour | 24.4 GB → 1× RTX 5090 · $0.42/hour |

Why do GPU counts jump from 2 to 4 to 8?
Tensor parallelism splits every layer's attention heads evenly across the GPUs. vLLM refuses to start when the head count is not divisible by the number of GPUs. Llama 3.1 70B has 64 attention heads, so 2, 4 or 8 GPUs work and 3 do not. Three 80 GB H100s (240 GB) hold a 168 GB model on paper but are not a usable layout; four are. Instances have 1 to 8 GPUs depending on the host. Before you start, the dashboard shows each host’s country, GPU count, form factor (SXM or PCIe) and interconnect.
How much does the right GPU cost per hour?
Precision changes the bill more than any other choice. Llama 3.1 70B needs one B200 in BF16 but one L40S in 4-bit. According to GPUwithCrypto's price check of 29 October 2026, the lowest self-serve on-demand prices for those two GPUs were $5.43 and $0.97 per hour: 4-bit cuts the hourly cost by 82%. At our prices the pair costs $4.61/hour and $0.82/hour. Check 4-bit output on your own prompts before you commit. Every GPU and block of hours is on the pricing page.
VRAM questions
How much VRAM do I need to run a 70B model?
About 168 GB in FP16/BF16, 84 GB in FP8 and 42 GB in 4-bit, with the 20% overhead rule. That is one B200, one H200 or one 48 GB L40S. A 128K-token conversation adds 42.9 GB of BF16 KV cache on Llama 3.1 70B.
How much VRAM do I need to fine-tune a 7B model?
Full fine-tuning of a 7B model needs 112 to 126 GB before activations (16 to 18 bytes per parameter). LoRA needs about 16.8 GB (7 × 2 × 1.2) and QLoRA about 5.3 GB (7 × 0.75), so both fit a 24 GB RTX 4090.
How much VRAM do I need to train a LoRA?
For an LLM, about 2.4 GB per billion parameters with a BF16 base, or 0.75 GB with a 4-bit base (QLoRA). For FLUX.1 [dev], whose transformer has 12B parameters, that means about 28.8 GB for LoRA (an RTX 5090) and 9 GB for QLoRA.
How much VRAM do DeepSeek V4 Flash and V4 Pro need?
Their published weights take 159.6 GB (Flash, 284B parameters) and 864.7 GB (Pro, 1.6T) on Hugging Face. With 20% overhead that is 191.5 GB and 1,037.6 GB: two H200s and eight H200s at minimum. The DeepSeek V4 guide has the commands.
Can I run a 70B model on one RTX 4090?
Not fully in VRAM: even in 4-bit the weights take 35 GB, more than its 24 GB. Tools that offload layers to system RAM run it, but every token then waits on transfers over PCIe. One 48 GB L40S holds it in 4-bit.
Can I pay for the GPU with crypto?
Yes. GPUwithCrypto takes BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC from a $25 top-up, with no ID and no card. Instances are billed per minute at the hourly rate while they run, from the GPU-hours you bought for that GPU. Stopping an instance stops the charge at once.
